The Vehicle Proximity Detection System (or VPDS) is a merging safety system for large-scale semi trucks. The product consists of two arrays of four ultrasonic distance sensors to be placed on either side of the truck's trailer, as well as a user interface unit inside the cab. The system is activated by the truck's turn signal, which also tells the system which bank of sensors to scan. If a vehicle is detected to be within 5 feet of the truck, a yellow warning light will illuminate on the corresponding position of the display. If that distance drops to 3 feet or less, a red light will also illuminate, and a buzzer will sound, allerting the driver.
